is the issue of gay teens still controversial?
A few of you have commented in the "welcome" section that this is becoming more of a non-issue. Are teens more accepting of their gay peers now? I was just speaking with one of my co-workers and she suggested that the age cutoff for gay acceptance is 35 years old. But, I'm over 35 and I don't see myself or my friends having an issue with this. My parents generation, on the other hand, does seem to still be rather perplexed by the gay population. Is there an age line of intolerace, and if so, what age seperates the tolerant from the intolerant?

Of course, the issue of gay teens is still controversial. Gay teens are still being physically threatened, judged harshly in their families and ostracized for being gay. Certainly there are pockets of society that are more tolerant to people with different life styles but those are few and far between. It seems to me that our society in general is exhibiting more intolerance as hate crimes increase and more homophobia is exhibited.
It was still rough when I was in high school in Baltimore about 15+ years ago. It was a total put down to be called “gay” and this was in a well educated, liberal (I thought) area. How sad when we were all unsure and searching for who were that we could support each other – wish I could go back now with the confidence and attitudes I didn’t have back then! I don’t think the Geography Club would have happened in my school unfortunately. I have a married male friend who grew up in the area too and recently came out with total support of his (now ex) wife, knowing he had been gay and suppressed it for years. I’m glad we can support him now but sad for him that he missed so many years not being his true self.
I think "anonymous" message below, captured it perfectly, and sadly enough: “… our society in general is exhibiting more intolerance as hate crimes increase and more homophobia is exhibited.” We live in a fearful society now a days and anyone “different” is feared by most ignorant Americans!
